My job(s)
Today I started both jobs. First I worked with Russell Little-One-Who-Prays Gallardo..[no joke on the middle name, His native americans adopted him and his brother and renamed them both when he was 12.] Bizarre. Anyway he’s a delinquent and high profile offender. I was a little nervous this morning but we both survived. He learned some algebra and physical science. I felt I learned much more, however. He taught me: that it’s hard to be a ‘G’, ‘gangsta’s’ refer to juvy as ‘the halls’, apparently juvy is just not what its called anymore. And if you’re not in ‘the halls’ your on ‘the outs’. Clever. Lastly, one can make tattoo ink in ‘the hall’s with pilot pen ink, and/or crushed pencil lead, toothpaste, and a drop of water. I’m sure this next month that I get to teach Russell will be most instructional for both of us.
Then I went to my second job as a behavior therapist and observed Calvin. He has autism but is overflowing with energy and asks the weirdest questions over and over again, like ” Where did your house go?”, and why I have a bed. He wants to talk and have a conversation but just doesn’t know how. He’s a crack up and full of energy. I am looking forward to working with him but it will be a challenge to learn to not giggle. Oh…. he randomly said ’ excuse me’ loudly during an exercise and both of the therapists asks what for. He then replied “Umm…….I ran out of gas”… that made me chuckle… euphemisms are hard. ;)
